The best thing to do with this kind of radio is to use it as a cross-band
repeat hand-held thru another kenwood base or mobile doing the cross-
band-repeating, such as a 732, 741, 742 etc. Then you can run the
milliwatt power level, run it all day, never worry about running out, and
always have a plenty good signal. Write me for more comments if you please.

I have the Yaesu 5200 which is similer to the 5100 you are looking at. I have
had mine since November and like it very much.

Only problem is that the 732 has a crappy receiver. Its okay if you live in
the country, but it dies in urban intermod alleys

Are there any popular opinions on this particular combination of parts?
FT-707, early-1980's solid state, compact SSB XCVR
FV-707DM, Digital VFO with 12 memories (external)
FP-707, matching 20 amp power supply (50% duty cycle) w/built-in speaker
FC-707, matching 150 watt antenna tuner with 50 ohm dummy load built-in
Anybody ever own this station (or parts thereof) and can therefore comment
on its quality, performance, etc.?

I know UARTS (8250,16550) both support 5 bit ASCII (baudot), but
don't know what modulation technique RTTY uses.
Can this be done?

I'm interested in getting opinions as to which of the four Kenwood
speaker-mics would would be best for use in a high noise environment.
Basically I'm going to be carrying my HT around an airport tarmac and I
want to know which speaker-mic would have the best audio output with the
volume turned up.
Thanks,

The HTX-202 is a superb radio for the money. Bullet proof receiver with
great transmit AND receive audio. Only problem is it is larger than most
portables and due to its receiver being optimized for the ham band, it will
not go out of band.
I use one for a dedicated packet station, and it is great to have a 2m
radio that won't go spastic when you put a real antenna on it
